A teenager from Bristol is set to become one of the youngest doctorate holders in the city – before she has gone to university. Fahma Mohamed will be awarded the Doctor of Laws by Bristol University – an honorary degree acknowledging her campaigning work to end female genital mutilation (FGM).The former City Academy pupil will be starting university at Kings College London this September, taking on an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science.
BRISTOL schoolgirl Fahma Mohamed, the face of a national campaign to raise awareness of female genital mutilation in schools, has won a top award for being an outstanding young campaigner. Fahma, 17, was presented with the Good Housekeeping’s award at a presentation in London.
It recognises “an extraordinary young woman’s determination to prevent the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) and to protect girls across the UK.” Fahma was the face of the EndFGM Guardian campaign launched in February and called on former Education Secretary Michael Gove, to write to all teachers in England and Wales, warning them of the dangers of FGM.
