Somali American Youth Parents Association is a nonprofit organization that puts together events once a month for the Somali Community who live in the state of Massachusetts.
SAYPA’s monthly meeting is about how the Somali immigrant youth needs leadership & mentorship; particularly they need guidance about challenges facing immigrants, Somali youth in Boston and their ability to effectively engage and integrate into the Boston society.
The overall SAYPA monthly meeting goal is to build a fair and inclusive society and ensure that the Somali youth have the resources, skills, and opportunities to live a life of dignity, and successfully stand out in the American society.
Holding cultural activities will involve developing community capacity and understanding the specific needs and challenges of this demographic, also to empower youth, provide meaningful public educational opportunities, and build a solid foundation for institutional engagement on the issues facing the Somali youth.
During July’s meeting, the youth performed three plays that they came up with on their own, a fashion show and a quick Somali cultural dance. Activities like these help empower the youth and encourage them to learn more about their culture. Staying with your own culture is very important when it comes to a community and if our youth are not taught the proper way of their own culture, they can easily go astray. It is vital to show the youth their culture and for them to know that they forever will be Somali.
