The flag of Somalia was designed by Maxamed Cawaale Liibaan and it was adopted on October 12, 1954. It is a rectangular banner, sky blue in color and it has a good-sized white star in the middle. The star, which is called Star of Unity, has five pointy sides, which represent all the Somalis whose lands are in: (1) Waqooyi (the North) of Somalia, (2) Koonfur (the South) of Somalia, (3) Jabuuti, (4) Soomaali Galbeed (in Ethiopia) and (5) Waqooyi-Bari (in Kenya). There many songs dedicated to the flag, but the most popular one is:
Qoloba calankeedu waa caynoo
Innaga keenu wa cirkoo kale oo
An caadna lahayne caashaqa
Xidigyey caddi waad na ciidamisee
Carrada kaligaa adow curadee
Cadceedda sideeda caan noqo
Cishadad dhalataad calooshayadii
Sidii culaygii cidaad marisee
Allow ha ku celin cawoy dhaha
Shantena cududood cadkii ka maqnaa
Adow celiyoyna caawimayee
Wa calaf cimrigays-ku keen simayee
